Children in South Toledo are 81% behind their middle-class peers on their first day of Kindergarten. Research shows that this is due to decreased vocabulary caused by the stress of poverty and decreased exposure to books.

Baby University families increased the number of times they read to their children per week from an average of three times per week to six times per week.

Baby University graduates report continuing to read to their children and average of 6.3 times per week one year after attending.

In South Toledo, only 16% of 5 year olds test ready for Kindergarten with the State of Ohio’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment. Early intervention is key to erasing this gap, that’s why we provide early learning scholarships for children who do not qualify for state funding.
